Who is Mike Weiss?
Mike Weiss grew up in the record business. His father, Sam Weiss, started in jukeboxes, launched the doo-wop label Old Town, ran a distributor and founded Sam Records, a leading disco label by the mid-1970s. Mike studied at Stanford and took a law degree at Syracuse University before joining the family business.
He first tried to revive Sam Records, but New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker advised him to build his own identity instead. That led to Nervous. Today Mike also DJs as Mike Nervous.
The birth of Nervous Records: 1991 and the vinyl years
Nervous launched in 1991 with Roger Sanchez’s Feel It, released under his Niceguy Soulman alias. The name was a joke in itself, as “nervous” was slang for something lame. Mike hired an illustrator to create a logo no other label had: an anxious cartoon character whose crew cut is being knocked off by a flying record. Bootleg T-shirts with the character were popular in England before many people there even knew the label.
New York’s club scene broke the records. Louie Vega’s night at the Sound Factory Bar became a launchpad, with UK A&Rs hearing tracks there and licensing them for Europe. Classic early Nervous releases include:
- Sandy B, Feel Like Singing
- Josh Wink, Don’t Laugh, which became a worldwide hit
- Loni Clark, Rushing
- Nuyorican Soul (Louie Vega and Kenny Dope), The Nervous Track
- Willie Ninja, Hot, produced by Louie Vega (1994)
- Kim English, Unspeakable Joy
Other key names from the era include David Morales, Danny Tenaglia, Kerri Chandler, Mood II Swing and Byron Stingily of Ten City.
Wreck Records and the hip-hop years
Nervous didn’t stop at house. It launched sub-labels for different sounds, including Sorted for techier records and Weeded for reggae-tinged releases. Its hip-hop imprint, Wreck, released Black Moon’s debut album Enta Da Stage in 1993, plus music from Smif-N-Wessun, whose Dah Shinin’ is a classic, and Funkmaster Flex.
Wreck didn’t run for long, and Mike has said he regrets not focusing more on hip-hop. In the same period he turned down offers to fold Nervous into Rick Rubin’s Def American and Madonna’s Maverick label, keeping it independent.
Staying independent while others sold
Many of New York’s 1990s house labels have since closed or been bought by bigger companies. Nervous is one of the few still running independently. Merchandise featuring the logo character and Nervous club events, at venues including The Brooklyn Mirage and Silo, have helped keep the business going alongside record sales.
From vinyl to digital
When Nervous started, DJs played vinyl and sales came from records, CDs and cassettes. Today almost everything is digital, sold through download stores such as Traxsource and Beatport and streamed worldwide. Since 2024 the label has released three to five titles a week.
Mike’s view is that the basics haven’t changed: good A&R, strong branding, a consistent release schedule and treating artists well. Long-time staffer Andrew Salsano, who leads A&R and licensing, was named Vice President in 2024.
Nervous Records today
The label has found a new generation of fans through modern club hits. Mau P’s The Less I Know The Better, Loofy’s Last Night and Vinter’s Space Pump (Space Jam) all reached No.1 on Beatport, and Mochakk’s Da Fonk featuring Joni became one of the label’s biggest club records. At the same time, Nervous keeps working with its foundations, including Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Todd Terry and Oscar G.
For its 30th anniversary in 2021, Nervous released a 30-track compilation, Nervous Records – 30 Years, with new versions and remixes from Louie Vega and Josh Milan, David Morales, DJ Pierre, Felix Da Housecat, Radio Slave, Gerd Janson and Tensnake.
Lessons from Nervous Records for producers and label owners
- Build a brand people remember: the Nervous logo made the label recognisable before many fans knew its records.
- Relationships come first: Mike Weiss credits long-term relationships with artists, staff and the industry for the label’s survival.
- Release consistently: a steady release schedule keeps a label visible to DJs and stores.
- Back new talent and your foundations: Nervous mixes young producers with the artists who built its sound.
- Nobody can predict a hit: stay active, keep releasing and keep showing up.
